The climate of Cotonou (Benin)
Cotonou is the largest city of Benin situated on the south coast on the Gulf of Guinea. All government buildings are in Cotonou which makes Cotonou the de facto capital. Officially the capital is Porto-Novo. Cotonou is Benin’s major port, mainly used as a transit port for the surrounding countries. The city also has an airport and is situated on the most important highway of the country. Cotonou is connected to the interior via railroad to the city of Parakou. The Notre Dame de Miséricorde, also known as Cotonou’s cathedral is one of the most remarkable buildings in the city. Cotonou has a warm savannah climate with many warm days during the year. Average temperatures here are a little lower than in the interior. During the warmest days of the year a sea breeze offers some cooling. There is one distinct wet period from March till October. Especially June is a wet month.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
