The climate of Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia)
Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world. The salt flat is situated at an altitude of 3,600 meters and is about 10 square kilometres. The crust is several meters thick and lies over a salty lake. This lake contains about 50% of the world’s lithium reserves. The climate is the same all year round. During the summer temperatures rise to 20 degrees Celsius. During the night it is cold here all year round with temperatures between -5 to 5 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is uncommon. However, the plane may get flooded with water from other lakes. Salar de Uyuni has a cold desert climate. Hardly any rain falls here. The only supply of water comes from other lakes that are in the vicinity. Because temperatures are below 18 degrees Celsius on average the climate is classified as a cold desert climate.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
