Belo Horizonte is located in the south-eastern part of Brazil and is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. The city is situated in a hilly area at an altitude of 850 meters. Belo Horizonte means beautiful horizon. Belo Horizonte is a planned city, based on the urban planning of Washington. The city is situated on the ridge of the Espinhaço mountain range and is completely surrounded by mountains. In 2014 Belo Horizonte is one of the host cities for the soccer World Championship. Belo Horizonte has a tropical savannah climate. Because the city is situated on in the southern hemisphere spring starts in September, summer in December, autumn in March and winter in June. The climate can be divided into two main periods: a rainy period and a relatively dry period. The rainy period is from October till March; the rest of the year showers are uncommon. Even during the coldest period of the year subzero temperatures are uncommon. The coldest temperature on record is 2 degrees Celsius. Because of the 852 m elevation of Belo Horizonte temperatures are slightly lower than you would expect in this part of Brazil.
