The climate of the winter sports regions in Bulgaria (Bulgaria)
The southwestern part of Bulgaria consists of mountains. It is much colder in the Rila, Rhodope and Pirin mountain ranges than it is in the rest of Bulgaria. During the winter these regions form a popular winter sports destination. However, the amount of snow and temperatures depend on the location you are in. In general, there is enough snowfall to go on winter sports here during a longer period of time. The most popular winter sports destinations are: Pamporovo, Borovets, Bansko and Vitosha.
During the winter it may get really cold here, especially in the regions located above an altitude of 2,000 meters. On several peaks the snow doesn’t melt till late spring. During the summer temperatures rise to pleasant values. During this period the mountains are very popular among walkers and hikers.

Climate figures
The figures below are based on long term weather and climate records. They are an average for the higher regions located in the southern and southwestern parts of Bulgaria (Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountain ranges). Because the figures apply to a large region with differences in altitudes local deviations may occur.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
