The climate of Fogo (Cape Verde)
Fogo is a small island which is part of the Sotavento or leeward islands, Cape Verde. An active volcano can be found on the island, the Pico de Fogo which is also the highest point on the island with an altitude of 2,829 meters. On the northern side of the volcano Fogo National Park can be found. The capital of Fogo is São Filipe; this is also the largest city on the island. São Filipe airport can be found in the vicinity of the capital. In the northern part of the island a small local airport can be found. Coffee and sugar are cultivated on the slopes of the volcano. Most tourists travel here to see this beautiful volcano. Fogo has a tropical savannah climate characterized by a relatively dry period and a wet period. Temperatures are slightly lower here than on the other islands of Cape Verde, this is caused by the altitude. Temperatures here can be compared to those along the Mediterranean Sea. There is an ever blowing, sometimes fierce sea wind on Fogo which may temper temperatures. However, when the wind comes from the Sahara warm air is supplied and temperatures rise. This wind is known as the Harmattan wind.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
