The climate of Mindelo (Cape Verde)
Mindelo is a large city in the western part of the island of São Vicente which is part of the Barlavento Islands, Cape Verde. Mindelo is the capital of the island and the second largest city in Cape Verde. The main source of income is the port which is an important stopover for trans Atlantic journeys. The city has its own hospital and a university that dates back to Portuguese colonial times. The city is known for its vibrant and colorful carnival procession. Mindelo has a tropical savannah climate characterized by constantly warm temperatures all year round. Precipitation figures are low all year round with the exception of the rainy period in August, September and October. During this period temperatures may slightly rise causing a muggy feel. Because the city is situated in the Ocean there is an ever blowing sea wind. Depending on the direction of the wind temperatures may either rise or drop. The wind that comes from the Sahara is also known as the Harmattan.
