The climate of Sal (Cape Verde)
Sal is a small island which is part of the windward or Botavento islands, Cape Verde. The capital of the island is Espargos which is located in the interior. This island has a population of 15,000, more than half of the inhabitants live in the capital. A popular tourist destination on Sal is Santa Maria. This city is known for the snowy white beaches that can be found here. Most large hotel chains have opened branches here over the past few years. An international airport can be found on the island: Amílcar Cabral international airport. Tourism is the main source of income for the island.
Sal has a tropical savannah climate. Of all the tropical climate types this type gets the least amount of precipitation. Rain only falls during a few months per year. Because of its situation Sal has also characteristics of a desert climate. Temperatures do not rise as high here as in places with a desert climate. However, Sal gets periods of extreme drought. Temperatures are constant and pleasant all year round. An ever blowing sea wind offers some cooling. However, when the Harmattan wind blows from the east temperatures rise.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
