The climate of São Filipe (Cape Verde)
São Filipe is the capital of the island of Fogo which is part of the leeward (or Sotavento islands) islands of Cape Verde. The scenery is dominated by the still active volcano Pico de Fogo. São Filipe is located on the west coast of the island, the airport is situated in the vicinity of the city. The city is known for its 5 kilometer long beach which is pitch black. Swimming is advised against during the largest part of the day because of the changing currents. São Filipe is one of the oldest cities in Cape Verde. Many old colonial buildings can still be found here. Because of this the city is put forward for nomination to be included on the list of Unesco world heritage sites. São Filipe has a tropical savannah climate. Temperatures are lower here than in other places in Cape Verde. However, really low temperatures are uncommon. Precipitation figures are higher here than on the more easterly located islands causing vegetation to be much greener. The Harmattan wind has little influence on Sào Filipe. However, these winds may still cause a dry and dusty air. The autumn is the wettest period.
