The climate of Medellin (Colombia)
Medellin is the third largest city in Columbia. It is one of the biggest urban areas in the world. About 2.4 million live and work here. Medellin was one of the first cities in Columbia to industrialize. It is still an important economic center in the country. Several important universities are situated in the city. During the 1980s Medellin was notorious because of its gang wars and drug cartels. Although crime rates have decreased Medellin is still a dangerous city for tourists. With about 9 murders every day this city is not really suitable as a tourist destination. Medellin has a tropical monsoon climate. However, temperatures are lower here than in other places with the same climate type. Medellin is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level. Because of this average temperatures are lower. On average temperatures are between 15-30 degrees Celsius (59-86 degrees Fahrenheit), this makes the tropical climate very bearable here. The climate of Medellin is compared to an eternal spring.
