The climate of Hiva Oa (French Polynesia)
Hiva Oa is a small island in the Marques Islands in French Polynesia. The island is mostly known for the fact that the French painter Paul Gaugain spent his last days on the island; he was buried on the island. In the vicinity of his grave the grave of the Belgian singer Jacques Brel can be found who spent his last years on the island as well. A small museum on these two celebrities can be visited on the island. One of the most beautiful spots on the island is the bay in the vicinity of the village of Atuona. From here you have a spectacular view over the rugged volcano peaks on the island.
Hiva Oa has a tropical rainforest climate with high precipitation figures. The average annual temperature during the day is around 30 degrees Celsius. The large amounts of precipitation in combination with high temperatures may cause high humidity figures. Because of the northerly situation of the island there is no risk of tropical storms and hurricanes here.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
