The climate of Valkenburg (the Netherlands)
Valkenburg Valkenburg aan de Geul is located in the most southern part of the province of Limburg. Larger cities such as Maastricht, Aachen (Germany) and Liège/Luik (Belgium) are in the vicinity. Once a year Valkenburg is the cycling capital of the Netherlands when the Amstel Gold Race is held on the Cauberg. Several cycling events are organized for amateurs. Several footpaths are set out here for those who want to enjoy the hilly scenery. There is also enough to do for the less active among us: the thermal springs, the casino and the many terraces that can be enjoyed in the old city center. Valkenburg is also known as ‘Marl City’. The caves near Valkenburg attract more than 100,000 visitors every year. Although Valkenburg is situated a long way from the sea it has a moderate maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters. Valkenburg gets about the same amount of precipitation as the coastal places. Temperatures are slightly higher here than in the more northerly located cities. Extremes in temperatures may occur, because the climate of Valkenburg is only slightly influenced by the North Sea.
