The climate of Venlo (the Netherlands)
Venlo is a small town located in the north-eastern part of the province of Limburg in the vicinity of the border with Germany. The area surrounding Venlo has been inhabited for centuries and became a thriving city during medieval times because Venlo was a trading post. Venlo was granted town privileges in the 14th century; during the same century Venlo was fortified. During WWII many monumental buildings in the old city center were destroyed. However, the beautiful town hall and several other medieval buildings escaped destruction. Because of this Venlo still has a medieval character. VVV Venlo soccer club play their home matches in Venlo. Despite its location in the interior Venlo has a moderate maritime climate influenced by the North Sea and the warm Gulf Stream. Because Venlo is located in the southern part of the country temperatures are slightly higher than in the more northerly located places in the Netherlands. The difference is only 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. However, this difference is very noticeable. Longer periods with subzero temperatures do not occur as often as in other places.
