The climate of Callao (Peru)
Callao is a suburb of Lima located on the coast of Peru. The city was founded in the 16th century and was one of the most important trading posts for the Spanish mother country for centuries. Products from many Spanish colonies passed through this port. In the 20th century Callao got the reputation of being the largest port in the world for the distribution of cocaine. The city has a large naval base and a military academy. Several islands off the coast are military bases as well. Callao has a warm desert climate. This climate type is usually characterized by many hours of sunshine and low precipitation figures. However, because of a cold current off the coast the rising fog blocks the sunlight. Especially from June till October days are foggy and gray.
