The climate of Alvor (Portugal)
Alvor is a small town in the municipality of Portimão in the Faro district. The town is said to be founded by the Carthaginians. During the Roman era the village was one of the most important ports in this part of the Roman empire. Nowadays Alvor is a popular tourist destination in the Algarve. The beach is within walking distance. Several historic buildings can be found in the village such as Castelo de Alvor (castle) and the remains of an old Roman villa.
Alvor has a warm Mediterranean climate slightly influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. Because of this influence temperatures are slightly higher here than in the northern part of Portugal. The temperature of the sea is also higher here. However, winters are too cold to be suitable as a winter sun holiday. Most precipitation falls during the winter. Summers are extremely dry; there is a risk of forest fires.
