The climate of São Vicente (Portugal)
São Vicente is a small municipality on the main island of Madeira. The city was founded in the 15th century when the first colonists traveled to the islands of Madeira. According to an old legend the city was named after Saint Vincent of Zaragoza who is said to have appeared in the river. The main sources of income are fishing and agriculture. Over the past few years an increasing amount of tourists travel to São Vicente. São Vicente has a warm maritime climate also referred to as a subtropical climate. The climate of São Vicente is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures are slightly lower here than in the more southeasterly located places on the island. Most precipitation falls during the winter. Just like in the rest of Madeira the climate of São Vicente is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. However, when a so called Leste wind supplies dry and warm air from the African continent temperatures may rise above 30 degrees Celsius.

The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
