The climate of Kimberley (South Africa)
Kimberley is a mining city on the banks of both the Vaal River and the Oranje River. The city became famous after diamonds were excavated. “The Big Hole” lies in the vicinity. This is an old mineshaft which was dug out by human hands; it has a surface area of 42 acres (roughly 17 hectares). It is listed to become a historic monument.
Kimberley has a steppe climate. This type of climate is characterized by its drought. Only 250 millimetres to 500 millimetres of rain falls on a yearly basis. Most of the rain falls during the summer. Winters in the steppe climate zone are much colder. During the winter months temperatures can plummet.
