The climate of Colorado (United
States of America)
Colorado is a state located in the western part of the United States
of America. Colorado has been home to several Indian tribes for
thousands of years. These Indians lived in the valleys of the Rocky
Mountains as well as the plains of the High Plains. Colorado mainly
consists of mountainous regions, a large part of the state consists of
the Rocky Mountains. These sometimes inhospitable mountains determine
the landscape of Colorado. The eastern part of the state consists of
plains which are part of the Great Plains. Here the landscape mainly
consists of steppes, prairies and grasslands at an altitude of
1,000-2,000 meters (3,280-6,560 feet). The largest part of Colorado
has a cold steppe climate with low precipitation figures. On the many
mountain peaks the climate changes into a cold or moderate land
climate. The mountainous western part of the state has several micro
climates including the extreme high mountain climate. During the
winter precipitation in the mountains mainly consists of powdery snow.
This snow may not melt for a long period of time. However, eternal
snow does not occur in Colorado. During the second part of August most
snow has melted. Because winters are cold and there is sufficient
snowfall several excellent winter sports regions can be found in
Colorado. The best known is probably the fashionable Aspen where the
rich and famous go skiing during the winter. Extremes in weather are
not uncommon in Colorado. During the summer longer periods of drought
may cause forest fires which are not easy to put out. In the eastern
part there is a risk of tornadoes as well as heavy thunder.
