The climate of Belgium
According to the Köppen climate system Belgium has a moderate sea climate (Type Cfb) with relatively mild winters, mild summers and precipitation all year round. Belgium has this type of climate because of the influence of the North Sea. During the summer the sea water has a cooling effect on Belgium’s weather; during the winter temperatures don’t drop too much unless there is a strong easterly current. Some sources say Belgium has three different climate zones. However, this is not based on the Köppen climate classification. Some internet sites say Central-Belgium and the Campine have a modified sea climate. It also is said that the Ardennes have a modified land climate. This is based on the fact that this hilly area is situated farther from the sea which gives this climate a more forbidding character than the climate in the western part of the country.

Summer in Belgium
When there is a high pressure area over Scandinavia Belgium may get thunderstorms that come from France. However, when there is a high pressure area over France there is a good chance of pleasant weather. During the summer there is a difference in night time temperatures between the coastal places and the Ardennes. In the Ardennes temperatures are much lower. The Flemish coast is one of the largest tourist attractions. Tourists often travel to the coast, the Ardennes and cities such as Antwerp, Bruges, Liège, Ghent and Brussels.

Winter
During the winter there may be large differences in temperature between the coastal areas and the Ardennes. While temperatures along the coast may be well over freezing point the Ardennes may have subzero temperatures with snow at the same moment. The number of snow days is much higher in the Ardennes than in the rest of the country and during the winter temperatures are a few degrees lower on average which makes the Ardennes popular as a winter sports destination. However, there are no kilometers of long skiing tracks here; instead there are possibilities for cross-country skiing. There is no guaranteed snow here. During the winter it may just as well be grey, cold and wet.

Climate figures
The figures below are based on long term weather and climate records. They are an average for Belgium. Coastal temperatures are a little warmer in the winter and a little colder in the summer. The Ardennes get more precipitation and have colder winters. The listed sea temperatures are an average for the Flemish coast.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we monthly offer useful extra climate information.
