The climate of El Alto (Bolivia)
El Alto is one of the highest cities in the world located at an
altitude of 4,150 meters above sea level. The city of La Paz is
located nearby. The city was founded in the beginning of the 20th
century. It started to grow in 1950 when the city was connected the
water supply system. El Alto can be reached by plane and is connected
by a railroad to La Paz. El Alto is an important center in Bolivia’s
industry. El Alto has a cold steppe climate. This type of climate is a
transitional climate between a tropical rainforest climate and a
desert climate. The difference is in the amount of precipitation which
is much less than a tropical climate gets. However, summers are still
reasonably wet. Temperatures are below 18 degrees Celsius on average
all year round.
