The climate of Tierra del Fuego (Chile)
Tierra del Fuego is situated in the most extreme end of South America.
It is a Chilean archipelago against the Argentinian border and
includes among other things Cape Horn, the most extreme end of South
America, discovered by Ferdinand Magelhaes. The climate in Tierra del
Fuego can roughly be divided in two types. The southernmost islands
have a sub-arctic climate with tundra vegetation. The summers as well
as the winters are cool. In the winter months the temperatures drop far
below freezing-point. The more northern situated islands have a cool
maritime climate. Also in the summer months it may sometimes snow here
and the cold summers make the glaciers in this region melt only
slowly.
