The climate of Urumqi (China)
Urumqi is the capital of Sinkiang, an autonomous region in China. The
city is a melting pot of many different cultures and people. The area
has been inhabited for centuries. Evidence of this can be found in the
mummies that were found here. Just like the Egyptians the Urumqi
people mummified their dead. The mummies can still be admired in the
local museum. The city is the only city in China that has a population
of several millions and is situated at such a large distance from a
sea or ocean. The city flourished because of its location on the Silk
Route. Several mountains in the vicinity offer a spectacular view over
the city. Urumqi has a cold steppe climate with large differences
between temperatures in summer and winter. During the summer
temperatures may rise above 30 degrees Celsius; during the winter
temperatures drop below zero. Precipitation figures are rather low
here. However, during the summer precipitation figures are higher than
during the winter.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
