The climate of Avarua (Cook Islands)
Avarua is the capital of the Cook Islands and is located on the
volcanic island of Rarotonga. The city is home to 5,000 people. Its
main sources of income are tourism, trading and fishing. The most
important weekly event is the market on Saturday where you can buy
fresh fish, fruit and brightly colored pareu (wraparound skirt).
Avarua has a tropical climate with high temperatures all year round.
The warm season is from November until April. From May until October
temperatures are slightly lower. During the cooler season
precipitation figures drop to about half the amount that falls
during the warmer season. From the end of October until the end of
June there is a risk of tropical storms. In rare occasions a
hurricane may form. Hurricanes are locally known as cyclones.
