The climate of Rarotonga (Cook Islands)
Rarotonga is the largest and most densely populated of the Cook
Islands. The capital Avarua is located on this island. Rarotonga id
a typical volcanic island. The highest point on the island is Mount
Te Manga with an altitude of 652 meters above sea level. Rarotonga
was discovered during the 19th century by Europeans. However, the
island was already inhabited in the 5th century. The main sources of
income are agriculture and tourism. Rarotonga International Airport,
which is the largest airport on the Cook Islands is situated on this
island. Rarotonga has a tropical rainforest climate with a distinct
rainy period from December until May. During this period extremely
high precipitation figures are not uncommon. During this period
there is a risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. The temperature
of the sea is pleasant all year round and very suitable for
swimming. During the local winter nights may be cool with
temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).
