The climate of Guantánamo (Cuba)
Guantánamo is located in the south eastern part of Cuba and is the
capital of the Guantánamo province. Guantánamo means land between the
rivers. At approximately 15 kilometers from this city the
controversial American naval base of Guantánamo Bay is situated.
Officially this base is American territory on Cuban soil. In the
northern part of the city the Sierra Maestra ridge is situated. The
famous song Guantanamera is originally a Cuban song which means ‘woman
from Guantánamo’. Just like the rest of Cuba Guantánamo has a savannah
climate. The mountain ranges that are in the vicinity have some
influence on the climate here. Summers can be warm and humid but
mainly very wet. During the summer months Guantánamo has its rainy
season with very heavy rainfall. During the winter months temperatures
are a little lower and Guantánamo has its dry period which makes
staying here a lot more pleasant. During the summer months tropical
storms and hurricanes are not uncommon.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
