The climate of Santiago (Dominican Republic)
Santiago is located in the interior of the Dominican Republic and is
the capital of the Santiago province. Santiago is the second largest
town in the Dominican Republic and was founded by Columbus’ brother.
Several shopping malls, casinos and theatres can be found here.
Santiago has a first-rate nightlife, but it isn’t as exuberant as it
is in Santo Domingo. Santiago has a university, the Pontificia
Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra university. The north coast is
just over an hours drive away from here. Everywhere in the city the
sound of the merengue can be heard, 24/7.
The average temperature varies little in the city. The tropical trade
wind is responsible for a tempering effect. The months of December and
January are the coldest. The months of July and August are the
warmest. Just like all of the Caribbean Santiago has a tropical
climate. This makes Santiago vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical
depressions. The average temperatures are a little lower in Santiago
than in the rest of the country because the city is situated at 183
meters above sea level.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
