The climate of Axum (Ethiopia)
Axumor Aksum is a town in the farthest north of Ethiopia not far away
from the border with Eritrea. In earlier days the town was the centre
of the kingdom of Aksum. The famous princess of Sheba came from this
kingdom according to the archaeologists. The archaeological find-spots
of Axum are on the Unesco world-heritage list. Many sources allege
that the Ark of the Covenant is hidden here in a severely guarded
chapel. Outside the town lies the Debre Damo monastery, built in the
6th century AD. The monastery can only be reached by climbing a 15
meter high precipice. Aksum has a warm steppe climate with one
distinct rainy period. This rainy period is in the months of July and
August. In this period there are not many days with precipitation but
if it starts raining then the shower seems to last for ever. Due to
the more elevated situation of the town the average temperatures here
are somewhat lower than in the rest of the country.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
