The climate of the river Rhône (France)
The climate of the river Rhône cannot easily be described in one
sentence. Due to the long course of the river it flows through various
regions with an equally divers climate. Starting in Switzerland as a
glacier, of course here prevails the Alpine climate with much snow and
severe winters, the river slowly flows in the direction of the
Mediterranean Sea. Generally you can say, the closer you get towards
the mouth of the river Rhône at the sea, the warmer and drier the
climate gets. The difference in temperature between the source and the
mouth can sometimes be even 15 degrees Celsius. Also the amount of
precipitation becomes less and less when you get closer to the mouth.
On the way we come across the following towns: leaving Switzerland the
first big town is Lyon (see climate information
Lyon), further down on the banks of the river we also come across
the towns Valence and Avignon (see climate
information Avignon).
At the division of the river Rhône into two currents lies the town of
Arles. Also here begins the sanctuary of the Camargue (see
climate information of the Camargue).

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
