The climate of Aomori (Japan)
Aomori is located in the northern part of the island Honshu. The city
is situated on the Mutsu Bay at the foot of the Hakkõda mountain
range. These mountains are a perfect setting for beautiful walks. The
city itself has many sights as well. Several museums can be visited,
such as the Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum of art and the Aomori City
History and Folk Arts Museum. Several ancient ruins also can be
visited. Aomori has a cold maritime climate with cool summers and
severe winters. The city is famous for heavy snowfall; the record is
209cm. The heavy snowfall is caused by fierce winds that blow around
the city. The fierce winds make the air twist and rise which causes it
to cool down rapidly and then causes snow to fall. During the summer
months the so-called Yamases wind blows. This type of wind causes
temperatures to drop rapidly. During the summer fog is not uncommon in
the city. Flights from Aomori airport often get cancelled because of
this.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
