The climate of Irbid (Jordan)
Irbid is located in the northwestern part of Jordan in the Irbid
district of which it also is the capital. Because Irbid is located in
the vicinity of the borders with Israel, Syria and the Palestinian
territories it is one of the most important trading centers in Jordan.
The city has a population of almost 300,000 and the urban areas have a
population of about 500,000. Irbid is an old city, remains of
civilization have been found dating back to 5,000BC. The city has
always been known for its olive oil. Because of the universities that
can be found in Irbid it is a real student city with an exhilarating
nightlife. Irbid has a steppe climate with pleasant to warm summers
and cool winters. Winters are fairly cool with nighttime temperatures
of about 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit). Subzero
temperatures during the night are not uncommon. During the winter most
precipitation falls. Irbid gets about 500 millimeters of annual
precipitation. Summers are very pleasant with average temperatures of
about 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).
