The climate of Petra (Jordan)
Petra is located in the southeastern part of Jordan and is the former
capital of the Nabateans. These people lived in a gorge between the
hills and are famous for their rock-cut architecture. The monastery is
probably the best known example and is seen as the most beautiful
example by most people. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists
travel here to admire the architecture. Petra has been a Unesco
preservation site since 1985. Over the centuries the buildings have
become ruins and it is almost impossible to restore the buildings. The
government of Jordan does its utmost to keep the place as authentic as
possible. Petra is also seen as one of the seven new wonders of the
world. Petra has a warm desert climate characterized by large
differences in temperatures and low precipitation figures. Summers are
warm without ever getting too hot. Nights may even be cool after the
hottest days of the year. Winters are cold and subzero temperatures
are not uncommon. During the summer it is extremely dry here. Some
precipitation falls during the winter. However, precipitation figures
are still extremely low.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
