The climate of Skopje (Macedonia)
Skopje lies in the north of Macedonia on the river Vardar. Skopje is
not only the capital of Macedonia, but it is also the biggest town of
the country. Almost 700,000 people live in the larger urban district
of the town. Skopje is situated not far from the border with Kosovo.
The area in the vicinity of Skopje belongs to one of the longest
inhabited areas of Europe. Signs of permanent habitation of more than
5,500 years old have been found here. Skopje was part of the Byzantine
empire as well as the Ottoman empire. Mother Theresa was born in this
town. Like the rest of Macedonia Skopje has a moderate continental
climate with warm dry summers and reasonably cool winters. Skopje is
situated relatively low and has to deal with higher temperatures than
the rest of Macedonia. Because in the winter months the temperature is
often around freezing-point there is regularly wintry precipitation.
People living or working in Skopje know that there is always a couple
of days a year when public life of the town is completely upset
because of snowfall. In the summer months it is dry and often (very)
hot in Skopje.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
