The climate of Lukla (Nepal)
Lukla is located at an altitude of 2,800 meters and used to be
shepherds’ town. Nowadays it is the starting point for the ascent of
Mount Everest. A small airport can be found here that mainly takes
passengers from and to Kathmandu. The airport itself is an attraction.
It is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the world;
taking off and landing is a real challenge. Most travelers that come
here are backpackers who use Lukla as a starting point to explore the
Himalayans. Most people hike from Lukla to Manchee Bazaar where the
last preparations are made prior to the ascent of Mount Everest. Most
people stay here for a few days to get used to the thin air at this
high altitude.
Lukla has a cold version of the moderate China climate. Summers are
very wet with high precipitation figures. Temperatures here are much
lower than in the lower parts of Nepal. Winters are dry and cold.
During spring temperatures start to rise and summers are reasonably
warm.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
