The climate of Rwanda
Republic of Rwanda is a country in Central Africa. With a surface area of more than 26,000 square kilometers it is the smallest country in the region. The neighboring country of Burundi is just a little bit bigger than Rwanda. The entire country is situated at a high altitude. The lowest point of the country is the Rusizi River which is at an altitude of 950 meters above sea level. Rwanda has a tropical climate with low temperatures by tropical standards, this is because of the altitude at which the country is situated. During the day temperatures are between 20-27 degrees Celsius (68.0-80.6 degrees Fahrenheit). During the night temperatures are between 10-14 degrees Celsius (50-57.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

Two rainy seasons
Rwanda has two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The first rainy season is from February till the end of May. The second rainy season is not as heavy as the first and is from September till the second part of December. During the other months it is dry with July and August as the driest months in most places. The capital Kigali can only record 7 millimeters of rain in an entire month.

Temperatures
The moderate tropical climate in Rwanda has stable temperatures all year round. In the capital Kigali temperatures during the day are always between 25-26 degrees Celsius (77-78.8 degrees Fahrenheit). During the night temperatures are between 12-14 degrees Celsius (53.6-57.2 degrees Fahrenheit). Because of the moderate temperatures the climate is pleasant all year round. However, within the country fluctuations in temperatures can be recorded. The mountainous west and north are cooler than the lower situated east. During the winter snowfall is not uncommon either. The higher regions get a few snowy days per year.

More climate information
Climate tables are useful but they don’t give an overall picture of the climate and possible weather conditions during a period of time. How high the chances are of hot or cold weather or hurricanes can often not be found in these tables. This is why we offer extra climate information per month. The figures below are for the capital Kigali. For climate figures on specific regions and places please, visit the relevant individual climate pages.
