The climate of Gran Canaria (Canary
Islands / Spain)
The weather on Gran Canaria is characterized by a north easterly trade
wind and the Canary Current. Because of this the climate is very
stable in the coastal regions. Because the temperature of the sea is
also fairly constant Gran Canaria is ideal as a winter sun
destination. During the winter the weather is almost always
spring-like with a high chance of sunshine, temperatures around 20
degrees Celsius (68.0 degrees Fahrenheit) and a low chance of
precipitation. This is why Gran Canaria is very popular among sun
worshippers all year round. However, the higher regions in the
interior may be much colder, even snow may fall here. However, this
only occurs at very high altitudes.
Heavy rainfall
It does not rain that often on Gran Canaria and annual precipitation
figures are low. However, extreme weather conditions are not uncommon
here. Heavy rainfall may cause damage and flooding on this island.
Especially in the northern part and in the capital
Las Palmas these
phenomena may occur. On November 17 2009 about 100 millimeters of rain
fell within 24 hours, this is about 100 liters of water per square
meter.
Heat
During the summer it may get extremely hot on Gran Canaria when an
easterly wind supplies warm air from the Sahara. When this occurs
temperatures may rise up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees
Fahrenheit). In combination with the desert sand this may cause things
to feel very unpleasant for a few days in a row.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
