The climate of Gijón (Spain)
Gijón is a large city located in the northwestern part of Spain in the
Andalusia region on the Gulf of Biscay. This part of the Gulf of
Biscay is also known as the Bay of Gijón. The city has a population of
almost 300,000. During the 1970s the population figure of Gijón almost
doubled. The city has always been a university city. The Universidad
de Oviedo and the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia can be
found here. The best known museums in the city are LaBoral Centro de
Arte y Creación Industrial, Museo del Ferrocarril de Asturias and the
Museo del Pueblo de Asturias. Despite its location in the northwestern
part of Spain Gijón has a moderate maritime climate influenced by the
Gulf of Biscay and the Atlantic Ocean. Average temperatures during the
summer are lower here than in the more easterly situated coastal
regions in Spain. However, during the winter average temperatures are
about the same or even higher. During the winter precipitation figures
are highest.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
