The climate of Damascus (Syria)
Damascus is the capital of Syria and has a population of several
millions. Damascus was founded many centuries ago in a large oasis on
the banks of the Barada River. The first records of Damascus date back
to 1,500 BC. After the city had several rulers it became the capital
of Syria in WWII. The most important attractions in Damascus are: the
Umayyad mosque, the citadel of Damascus and the many Ottoman
buildings. Damascus has a warm steppe climate (type BSh according to
the Köppen climate classification). Summers are very warm and very dry
in Damascus. Winters are mild and slightly wetter. However, during the
wettest months of the year (January and February) only 43 millimeters
of precipitation per month can be recorded.
