The climate of Erbil (Iraq)
Erbil, also known as Arbil or Irbil is located in the northern part of Iraq. Erbil is the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region in the north. Erbil is the seat of the Kurdish Parliament. Erbil is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Urban life can at least be dated back to 5,000 BC. The first records date back to around 2,300 BC. The city is known for the citadel of Arbil, a very large fortress in the center of the city. The citadel determines the skyline of the city. Several beautiful mosques can be found in the city. The modern airport of the city stands out because of its unique architecture. Erbil has a warm steppe climate characterized by warm to hot summers and pleasantly mild winters. Summers are extremely dry, winters are fairly wet by Iraqi standards. During the winter daytime temperatures are pleasantly mild. However, night time temperatures may be low, subzero temperatures are not uncommon. During the hottest part of the day during summer temperatures may rise above 50 degrees Celsius.
