The climate of Londonderry (Northern Ireland)
Londonderry or Derry for short is located in Londonderry County in the
northwestern part of Northern Ireland. The history of this city is all
about the political differences between Catholics and Protestants.
Even the name of the city has been an issue for years. The government
presented a compromise: Derry/Londonderry; this has caused the city to
be known as ‘Stroke City’ among the local population. During the early
1970s several unarmed civilians were killed during a demonstration.
This day is now known as ‘Bloody Sunday’. Londonderry has a moderate
maritime climate with mild winters. Most precipitation falls during
the summer which is also the warmest part of the year. However,
temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius are uncommon. Because of the
influence of the Atlantic Ocean real cold is uncommon during the
winter and subzero temperatures hardly ever occur. Snowfall is
uncommon as well. When snow does fall it rapidly melts. November and
December are very dry by Northern Irish standards.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
